The Purple Robe Locust is a deciduous tree, reaching mature heights of 30-50 feet and 20-35 feet wide. The crown of this tree is upright and rounded in growth and considerably more dense than the regular Black Locust. Hardy in USDA hardiness zones 4-8.
Compound leaves 6-14 inch long, a faded blue-green in color emerge late in the spring. After turning pale yellow in the fall the leaves often drop earlier than most trees.
A massive blooming late in the spring of rose pink flowers are borne in 4-8 inch long rather dense clusters. The flowers produce the 2-4 inch long persistent seed pods.
