Common Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi)

Common Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi)
A neat shrub/groundcover of trailing habit (2-12″ high), and with flowers resembling those of the Arbutus, but much smaller. The leaves are entire, dark green in color, and about an inch long, and obovate or oblong in shape. They are alternately arranged on the stems. Fruit globular, of a bright red, smooth and shining.

This is a great photograph. I love this plant, even if I don’t seem to be able to grow it. I may give it a try again this spring!
Wonderful photograph! I spent time in northern Newfoundland and the Labrador coast in late summer, and took photographs of many ericaceous plants, including bearberry, crowberry, partridgeberry, andromeda, multiple species of blueberries…I love their foliage and growth habits, and given that I live in acid soil heaven, it’s time to start adding more of them to my native plantings. Glad you highlighted this plant!
