Black Tupelo also known as Black Gum, Sour Gum as well as Pepperidge is a slow growing deciduous tree hardy in zones 3 to 9. Growing 30-50 feet tall and 20-30 feet wide at maturity this rather excellent specimen tree is difficult to transplant as a result of a taproot.
With preference to moist well drained soil, does not perform well in high pH soils. (Ideal pH 5.5-6.5) Full sun to part shade will allow development of this tree and its medium textured dark green leaves. Fall color varying from bright yellow, orange red and purple. No major disease or insect pests to speak of, just a few minor instances of cankers, leaf spots, rust, leaf miner, as well as scale.
